The New York Racing Association will proceed with plans for a new three-story building at the site of the At the Rail tent at Saratoga Race Course after the new York State Franchise Oversight Board approved the plan Monday.
Construction will begin after the end of the 2018 summer season, with the project expected to be completed by opening day of the 2019 season. No cost estimate was provided.
"The new building will transform the parcel of land at the south end of the property with the type of differentiated seating, dining options and amenities synonymous with a world-class sporting venue," said NYRA CEO and President Chris Kay. "Perhaps most importantly, the new building will address the modern-day needs of Saratoga Race Course while honoring its history."
SOSH Architects will oversee design, bid and construction administration services. Matt Hurff of Saratoga Springs-based Frost Hurff Architects will continue as project consultant on historic preservation aspects.
The project was endorsed by the Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation and the Saratoga Race Course Local Advisory Board.
Earlier this year, NYRA announced the creation of The Stretch, a new hospitality area in the northeast end of the grandstand. The new box seats, reserved bar seats and dining tables will have a view of the thoroughbreds as they round the final turn.
The Stretch is expected to be ready for this summer's opening day.
