Potato-peeling frenzy at the Koroit Irish Festival
Posted
Each year, the Koroit Irish Festival celebrates the Victorian town's links to Ireland through a host of quirky competitions and parades.
The town thinks of itself as an Irish village; many local families can trace their ancestry back to people who fled the Gorta Mor, and continue teaching their young the traditions of Irish music and dancing.
Surrounded by potato-growing and dairy farms, and with the famous Micky Bourke's pub at its centre, Koroit is a spot on the map for many Irish diaspora.
The festival celebrates Irish cliches and includes an award for the most 'flaming' red-head, a red-head's parade, potato peeling and picking competitions and a musical challenge to sing or play the best version of 'Oh Danny Boy'.
