One dead after Sunday shooting incident in Bertram, Iowa

One person is dead after a shooting incident in Bertram.

According to a news release from the Linn County Sheriff’s Office, law enforcement received a call of a shooting in the 1200 block of Bertram St. in Bertram, Iowa on Sunday April a few minutes before 5 p.m.

When deputies arrived at the alleged scene they found a white male with a gunshot wound to his left foot, who said that the person who shot him was still at the residence and armed with a gun. Area Ambulance transported the victim to a local hospital for injuries that appear to be non-life threatening.

According to the release, Linn County Deputies, assisted by the Mount Vernon Police Department, surrounded the residence and found the suspect hiding in a detached garage at the residence. The suspect refused to come out of the garage and the Linn County Immediate Response Unit and Hostage Negotiators responded to the scene. After several hours of negotiations with the suspect, Deputies entered the garage to find the suspect deceased from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The suspect’s name is being withheld at this time. This incident remains under investigation by the Linn County Sheriff’s Office and the Linn County Medical Examiner’s Office.
