Tirupur:
A 31-year-old woman, who is believed to be having learning difficulties, has been impregnated allegedly by her neighbour near Madathukulam here.
However, local police have not filed an FIR as they are awaiting medical opinion on her mental health. Police sources said they are conducting an inquiry with three suspects.
The woman was staying with her mother, an agricultural labourer, in a village near Madathukulam taluk. “She used to rear a herd of goats after her mother leaves for work. She also used to visit the neighbouring houses to watch television,” a police officer said.
When the woman fell ill three months ago, her mother took her to a local hospital. To the mother’s shock, doctors there declared the woman pregnant. When the mother requested the doctors to abort the baby, they refused because of lack of haemoglobin content.
Fearing that the pregnancy will bring bad name to the family, the duo soon shifted to Dharapuram. The pregnant woman was treated at the Dharapuram Government Hospital as an out-patient for the pregnancy, which has attained seven months.
Recently, the mother lodged a complaint with Kaniyur police to take action against the man, who impregnated her. “Preliminary investigations found that the woman has physical inability. She could not walk steadily or even talk freely. But, we could not come to a conclusion on her mental ability. She seemed able to understand her routine works,” the officer said.
“We can confirm the offence and register FIR only after doctors give opinion on her mental health. We have identified three people as suspects, including her neighbour,” he added.
