Girl student attacked with knife on Annamalai University campus

The accused, identified as Naveen Kumar, 27, was thrashed by the locals and handed over to the police.

A girl student of Annamalai University in Chidambaram was attacked with a knife by a youth on the campus at 11 a.m. on Monday.

Lavanya sustained injuries on her neck and has been admitted to the Rajah Muthiah Medical College and Hospital.

The accused, identified as Naveen Kumar, 27, was thrashed by the locals and handed over to the police. He was admitted to the Chidambaram Government General Hospital.

According to police, Lavanya, hailing from Natrampalli in Vellore district, was pursuing her second year in M.Sc horticulture. She was walking from the Thamarai Girls hostel when Naveen waylaid her and started attacking her with a knife in full public view.

Naveen, working in a private company in Chennai, is also from Natrampalli and was known to Lavanya. However, she stopped talking to him after some time following which he started pestering her to marry him. 

He had consumed a cool drink mixed with pesticide before assaulting Lavanya.
