The resignation of Amber Rudd on Sunday night may defuse the immediate crisis over who knew what and when about deportation targets.

But Theresa May, the Prime Minister, will have to balance a range of factors in announcing her new Home Secretary on Monday.

Labour is intent on pursuing a Prime Minister who it says was responsible for a tough immigration policy developed on her watch.

And she must balance the array of views on a hard or soft Brexit within her cabinet.
