The Linn County Sheriff’s Office has included more details in the fatal shooting in Bertram, including the identities of victim who was injured and the suspect, who was later discovered dead following a standoff with law enforcement.

According to a news release from the Linn County Sheriff’s Office, law enforcement received a call of a shooting in the 1200 block of Bertram St. in Bertram, Iowa on Sunday April 29 a few minutes before 5 p.m.

When deputies arrived at the alleged scene they found a white male, later identified as John W. Lord, 37, of Cedar Rapids, with a gunshot wound to his left foot. Lord said that the person who shot him was Christopher J. Neagle, 41, of Cedar Rapids. At the time, Neagle was still at the residence and armed with a gun. Area Ambulance transported Lord to a local hospital for injuries that appeared to be non-life threatening.

According to the release, Linn County Deputies, assisted by the Mount Vernon Police Department, surrounded the residence and found Neagle hiding in a detached garage at the residence. Police say Neagle refused to come out of the garage and the Linn County Immediate Response Unit and Hostage Negotiators responded to the scene. After several hours of negotiations with the suspect, deputies entered the garage to find Neagle dead from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

This incident remains under investigation by the Linn County Sheriff’s Office and the Linn County Medical Examiner’s Office.
