Nagpur: The flying squad of Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s water works department and Orange City Water (OCW) have launched a drive against those using booster (tullu) pumps to fetch more drinking water from pipelines.
Within few days of launching the drive, the squad seized almost 39 pumps from localities like Gopal Nagar, Surendragadh, Ambazari, Tekdi Wadi, Bheem Nagar, Labhan Tanda, Vishwakarma Nagar, Raghuji Nagar, Tandapeth, Lal Darwaza, Dasra Road, Darshan Colony etc.

According to a press statement, the highest numbers of eight pumps were seized from Dhantoli zone, followed by seven in Lakadganj zone. Six pumps each were seized in Nehru Nagar and Ashi Nagar zones, one each in Hanuman Nagar, Gandhibagh and Mangalwari zones. Four, three and two pumps were seized in Satranjipura, Dharampeth and Laxmi Nagar zones.

OCW spokesperson said: “Using booster pumps is a punishable offence as per NMC’s water bylaw and strict legal action can be initiated against the defaulters.”

This year, NMC-OCW has firmly decided to initiate legal action as well as disconnection of tap connection, especially against those who illegally use booster pumps to fetch more volume of water supplied in their areas, the spokesperson said.

The joint teams have already identified areas where such booster pumps have been used extensively. Special zonal teams have also been constituted to raid the house, seize the pump and lodge legal action or initiate disconnection process in this regard.
