Puducherry Lt"Governor Kiran Bedi today called for "dedicating at least a part of the May Day (May 1) for manual work as proclaimed by the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi."
"International Workers Day, also known as May Day is a celebration of working class which contributes enormously to nation building. It is on the labour class the economic foundation of the nation rests," Bedi said in her message.
She wished working class joy and prosperity in their lives.
Chief Minister V Narayanasamy, Assembly Speaker V Vaithilingam and Labour Minister M Kandasamy extended their greetings to the working class.
Bedi will spearhead a "shramdhaan programme" at the 500-year old Aayi Pond (a water body) in neighbouring Muthirapalayam tomorrow.
The former IPS officer said in a release that saplings of different species of trees would be planted on the bank of the pond.
