Police cars damaged as North Melbourne party spins out of control

Four police cars have suffered significant damage including smashed windscreens after a wild party spiralled out of control in North Melbourne in the early hours of Sunday.

Fairfax Media understands the incident occurred outside a party held in a Shands Lane property that had been booked through Airbnb under a false name.

At least four police units arrived at the property about 2am, in response to multiple noise complaints.

They found up to 50 youths were at the party and asked them to leave.

Leading senior constable Lee Thomson said that as the group dispersed, they began throwing objects at police from a nearby laneway, significantly damaging four police vehicles.

Windscreens were smashed in, side mirrors were broken off and a number of panels were dented. Footprints left on one car show where attackers have jumped onto the bonnet to continue their attack.

Police have taken the vehicles for forensic testing including a check for fingerprints.

“Police members were not injured during the incident and no arrests have been made at this stage, with enquiries pending,” she said.

The officers involved are understood to have locked themselves in a building for their own safety.

The two-bedroom villa is listed on Airbnb as being available from $157 per night.

The listing includes “strict house rules” including “no parties” and noise levels needing to “be kept at an appropriate level at all times”.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is being asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
