HMRL takes up rain water harvesting structures"

Press Trust of India  |  Hyderabad

"As part of government's 'Jalam Jeevam' programme, to recharge the fast depleting table in the city and address the stagnation problem in the Metro corridors, HMRL"has come up with a rainwater harvesting structure design, a said today.

"Identifying the low lying road points/areas in the Metro corridors where rain stagnates, Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) is constructing about 100 rain harvesting structures with injection borewells mostly at the edge of the roads and about 200 structures without injection borewells," HMRL NVS Reddy"said in a release.

Enough gap is left between the filled up portion of the rain well and the perforated RCC slab, which can hold a minimum of 5,000 litres of at any point of time and the rain constantly gets sucked at good speed to deep underground layers through the injection borewell, explained.

While construction of new storm drains and desiltation works are being undertaken by HMRL in Metro corridors on a large scale, these rain harvesting structures with injection borewells are being built all along the Metro corridors including at Miyapur, JNTU, Punjagutta among others, he said.

"The already completed rain harvesting structures performed well during the recent rain and large quantities of which otherwise would have stagnated on the road surface got sucked into them."

"Each such rain harvesting structure with injection borewell costs around Rs 1.5 lakh rupees," added. " " "In November last year, had inaugurated around 30-km stretch between Miyapur and Nagole (stations) out of the 72-km long elevated"Hyderabad Metro Rail Project.
