Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday asked the people to follow traffic rules for their own safety and t hat of others.

“One should drive carefully and follow traffic rules. Only then their life as well as that of others travelling on roads would be safe,” asserted Yogi, pointing out that the negligence of a van driver led to the tragic mishap in Kushinagar leaving 13 children dead and 4 others critically wounded.

The CM appealed to the masses soon after flagging off a `Run for Safety’ (Traffic Safety Rally) from his Mall Avenue residence in Lucknow on Saturday morning. The rally was organised by Transport department as part of the on-going Traffic Safety Week in the state.

“If everyone follows traffic rules, the chaos on roads will end and avert many accidents which cost precious lives. It is a great challenge for officials to regulate traffic properly and to compel commuters to follow all rules,” the CM said.

Yogi said that the number of vehicles on roads are increasing by each passing day and hence without the support of people, the Traffic police could not handle the situation properly.

He also appealed to commuters that they must wear helmets, put seat belts on and never drive in inebriated state or while talking on mobile or listening to music through head phones.

Stressing on spreading awareness of traffic rules especially amongst students, Yogi said that `safety on roads’ must be included in curriculum of primary and secondary classes. He also voched for holding regular camps to check fitness of drivers and vehicles.

The CM however asked officials to take stern action against `stunt bikers’ as svereal causalities were reported due to them. He also asked officials to prepare a blue print of traffic management in each district and strictly implement them. “This will not only help in traffic management but will also minimise the death rate in accidents,” he said.

“For safely of minors, their parents must ensure that they should not drive vehicles unless they get a license for it,” the CM advised.

Deputy Chief Minister, Dr Dinesh Sharma said in the function that one should not just follow traffic rules as they were mandatory but adopt them for his own and other’s security. Sharma also appealed that management and principal of all schools and colleges must ensure proper fitness test of vehicles attached with them to cart students besides getting regular verifications of drivers and their fitness.

Principal Secretary (Information) Avneesh Awasthi was also present in the function along with other senior officials.
