Residents of Periyar Nagar finally heaved a sigh of relief as the road that was dug for various works in the last one year will soon be re-laid.

The Periyar Nagar Road that connects EVN Road, near Periyar Arch, with Gandhiji Road, near Head Post Office is one of the busiest roads in the city. Banks, commercial establishments, hospitals and residential areas were located in the stretch and flow of vehicles is also high.

A year ago, the road was dug for Under Ground Sewerage Scheme (UGSS) and work continued for over six months making it non-motorable.

Patients visiting the hospital faced risk due to its poor condition. Also, during rainy reason, the road turned as slush causing accidents. Hence, residents and shopkeepers called for relaying it at the earliest.

But work got delayed as the civic body began giving house service connections to connect it with the main pipeline in the middle of the road.

Works were recently completed and the tar-topped road was dug for balancing. Later, gravels were dumped on it and relaying is expected to begin soon.

A resident P. Santhosh said that poor road condition in the past one year has troubled them a lot as they wanted the civic body to fix deadlines and complete the work.

Boards showing nature of work and completion date should be installed at the work place so that residents could plan accordingly, he added.
