Calvin Otha Davis, 86, of Lynchburg, passed away on Saturday, April 21, 2018, at his residence. He was beloved and cherished by his wife of fifteen years, Vonnie J. Davis. Born on October 16, 1931, in Lynchburg, he was a son of the late Willis Davis and Oleatha White Davis. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Willis Davis. Calvin graduated from Dunbar High School in 1950, where he was class Valedictorian. He graduated from Hampton University in 1954, followed by two years in the U.S. Army, and earned his Master's Degree in English/American Literature from Howard University. For forty years he taught English in the Baltimore City School System, retiring as department head. He also authored three books, after spending a year's sabbatical in Paris writing at sidewalk cafes. He enjoyed writing, traveling abroad, plus singing and playing blues and jazz on his guitar. He once performed at the Smithsonian Institute by invitation. Spending time with Vonnie and his family were especially important. In addition to his wife, he leaves a son, whom he adored, Kelly Davis (Katrin) of Berlin, Germany to cherish his memory. Calvin also deeply loved his extended family of three stepchildren, Amy Rumler (Bart) of Roanoke, Ind., Steven Shubert of Waynesboro, Pa., and Michael Shubert (Christina) of Frederick, Md.; seven step-grandchildren, Svea, Timothy, Joshua, Eleni, Ryan, Gavin and Lauren; three step-great-grandchildren, Teddy, Benjamin and Zander; his sister-in-law, Barbara Davis of Cranston, R.I.; a nephew, Peter Davis of Oceanside, Calif.; and a niece, Nancy Davis O'Hara (John) of Cranston, R.I. Especially treasured were two close friends, Ron and Debbie Atkinson of Laurel, Md. A Celebration of Calvin's Life will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, June 30, 2018, at the Heritage Funeral Service and Crematory 427 Graves Mill Road, Lynchburg. The family will receive relatives and friends from 1:30 p.m. until service time at the funeral home.
