CHENNAI: The
CPM's state executive committee on Saturday passed three resolutions asking the state government to address the problem of drinking
water shortage in several districts, distribute financial relief to students belonging to SC and ST and not to stop the
MGNREGA (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act) in villages.
"Since the start of summer, many districts in the state are facing drinking water shortage. The state government must look into this issue on a war-footing and supply water to people. In many areas people are made to purchase water," said the resolution passed by the meeting attended by CPM state secretary K Balakrishnan, former state secretary G Ramakrishnan, Rajya Sabha MP T K Rengarajan and senior party leaders U Vasuki and others.
The Centre has not released nearly Rs 1,500 crore towards financial assistance for plus two students belonging to SC and ST in Tamil Nadu, said another resolution. "The state government must pressure the Centre and get the pending funds for these students," said the resolution.
The party accused the Centre and state of lowering the support for MGNREGA. "The number of working days has been lowered from 100 days to 40 days and now the working days are only 20. It is the poor people in villages, who are not getting employment. The party wants the state government and Centre not to lower the number of working days," said the resolution.
