Government takes over PMC

Expert panel asked to submit report in a month

Pariyaram Medical College would be converted into a Centre of Excellence and one of the best research centres, Health Minister K.K. Shylaja said.

She appealed to all political parties to support the government in developing the institution. As soon as space was identified, Karunya Pharmacy would be started in the medical college, she said after making the formal announcement regarding the takeover of the institution by the government here on Friday.

The government was trying to develop all medical colleges in the State to be among the top-ranked institutions in the country. Schemes were being devised so that the patient facilities and treatment available at these hospitals could be improved.

Master plans for MCHs

Master plans were being drawn up to upgrade each of the medical colleges. Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital (MCH) master plan had been allocated ₹717 crore, while Ernakulam MCH was sanctioned a ₹368-crore plan.

The health-care system was being revamped right from the primary level and institutions at secondary and tertiary care level were being upgraded in phases.

The results of the work being undertaken now in the health sector would become more visible within five years and Pariyaram MCH would emerge as one of the major achievements of the government, Ms. Shylaja said.

Loan paid off

The government has taken over all the liabilities of Pariyaram medical college and the outstanding loan from Housing and Urban Development Corporation (HUDCO) has been paid off.

The administration has been taken over by a Board of Control with the Collector as the chairman and V.G. Pradeepkumar and Raveendran, both doctors, as members.

The government has also entrusted a five-member expert committee to study various aspects of the institution and to submit a report to the government within a month.

T.V. Rajesh, MLA, presided. P. Karunakaran, MP; C. Krishnan, MLA; Kannur district panchayat president K.V. Sumesh; Kannur District Collector Mir Muhammed Ali; and Special Officer Ajayakumar were present.

Art gallery

Ms. Shylaja also inaugurated an art gallery set up by Kerala Lalithakala Academy at Pariyaram Medical College and the new Geriatrics Department at the institution.

The public meeting was followed by a meeting of the new Board of Control members and the members of the previous administrative council, chaired by the Health Minister.
