ABILENE - It was a good day for a pair of Bowie athletes at the Region I-3A Meet at Abilene Christian University on Saturday.
Seniors Kason Spikes and Kamryn Cantwell each won their respective events, advancing to the Class 3A State Meet in Austin on May 11-12. Also winning regional gold Saturday was Holliday's Leah Bullinger and Jacksboro's Baylee Thompson, who each claimed their second win a the I-3A meet.
Advancing to state with second-place finishes are Holliday's Konner Wood and Henrietta's Abby Zamzow.
Spikes won his first regional gold medal in the high jump, clearing the bar at 6 feet, 6 inches. That was two-inches better than second-place Abraham Bonilla of Spearman.
Cantwell claimed her second regional gold medal in the 400 after winning the long jump Friday. She'll make her second state appearance in the 400, crossing the line in 57.12.
Bullinger won the 3,200 meters Friday and followed it with a gold in the 1,600 Saturday. She coasted to the win in 5:25.24, winning by 11 seconds.
Thompson made sure she took gold in both throwing competitions, following Friday's win in the shot put with gold in the discus. The sophomore threw the disc 123-10, two feet further than anyone else in the competition.
Wood is also a state qualifier in the discus, clearing 158-6. He was 3 feet, 9 inches shy of first-place finisher Rhett Pennington of Canadian.
Zamzow won silver in the triple jump to punch her state ticket, clearing 37-8. The winning jump was made by Idalou's Madelyn Merrell at 38-6 1/4.
Eight area 2A atheltes advance to state
SPRINGTOWN - Munday's Kade Sanders and Kristen Kuehler, Archer City's Kweashad Brooks and Windthorst's Kora Pennartz earned regional track championships Saturday. Now they'll try their hand at winning state.
Also advancing to state with second-place finishes Saturday were Archer City's Coltin Knobloch, Munday's Kayla Taylor, Windthorst's Charlie Cooper and Electra's Alexa Daniel.
Brooks and Pennartz will each be competing in two state events. Brooks punched his ticket twice Saturday. He opened his day by placing second in the 100 with a mark of 11.24, just .03 behind winner Anthony Rangel of De Leon. He bested another De Leon athlete, Chris Cox, in the 200, winning the event at 22.71 by .04.
Pennartz won the long jump Friday to earn her state debut, but wasn't done qualifying. She won the girls 100 with a mark of 12.97, edging De Leon's Kailson Brinson by .02. Pennartz could actually be running in three events at state. She finished third in the 200 at 26.2, a time that might be good enough for the state wild card in the event.
Sanders won his first regional gold in the discus, winning with a mark of 150-7, a foot better than second-place Bowie Tanner of Wolfe City.
Kuehler won the same event on the girls side with a top throw of 130-4. Windthorst's Charlie Cooper also advanced in the event with a throw of 117 feet.
Knobloch placed second in the 400 at 50.68, trailing Maud's Jordan Creutz by .32. Daniel advanced to state in the same event, taking gold with a 1:01.53 mark.
Taylor rounds out the area's 2A state qualifiers, finishing at 2:26.91. Honey Grove's Amelia Butler finished in 2:26.
Benjamin girls finish second in I-A
LEVELLAND – The Benjamin Lady Mustangs finished second at the Region I-A Meet with 58 points, coming two points shy of champ Happy.
Benjamin’s 4x200 relay was golden with a 1:51.72 and its mile relay came in second with a time of 4:18.25. Myca Flowers also qualified in the high jump with a 5-2 – her fourth trip to state in that event – while freshman sister Macy Flowers won silver at 5-1.
Other area state qualifers who took silver from Region I-A were Knox City’s Cheyenne Roberson in the shot put (34-4 ½) and Northside’s Ray Ditmore in the 100 (11.44). Bronze medalists were Knox City’s Makayle Cline (100 hurdles) and the Greyhounds’ 4x200 boys relay, Crowell’s boys mile relay and Benjamin’s JC Espinal in the 1,600.
Shot putters sweep III-A
WHITNEY – The area produced two Region III-A champions in the shot put as Forestburg’s Zach Bradley won the boys with a 42-9 and Newcastle’s Arryn Eli won the girls with a 33-2. Prairie Valley's Chase Edwards got second with a 6-1 in the boys high jump.
Bronze medalists were the Newcastle grls 4x100 relay and Bryson’s Sydney Davidson in the 200.
