Opening of Kozhikode cyberdome postponed

The opening of the cyberdome, which was planned by the police to streamline cyber case investigations in north Kerala districts, was postponed following technicalities over allotting the required space at the Government Cyberpark. Sources said the issues could be settled within a couple of months and the space could be allotted within the Cyberpark campus.

Though the police had planned to make use of available space at ‘Sahya’, the first multi-tenanted IT building of Government Cyberpark, it failed to materialise as the selected space was within the notified Special Economic Zone. The move to denotify the area was not successful and the formal opening was postponed till the completion of formalities.

An officer attached to the project said efforts were on to denotify a convenient spot within the Cyberpark from the category of SEZ. The issue had already been taken up with the government functionaries, he added.

Volunteers

Though the official launch was postponed, the registration of volunteers on the official portal of the city police to support the project in various segments was not stopped. Till now, around 50 persons having special skills in IT from various north Kerala districts have registered their names to be part of the initiative. Eligible persons will be selected after police verification at different levels.

The government is planning to invest ₹1 crore to open the cyberdome in Kozhikode. Experts specialised in around 24 streams will be absorbed as volunteers, but they will not be given any monthly remuneration. IT companies specialised in the designing of special purpose mobile applications too will be encouraged to join the cyber initiative. So far, six IT companies based in Kozhikode have expressed interest to be part of the venture.

The police hope that the opening of the cyberdome will equip the investigators better to track cyber crimes and crack complicated cases.
