Bolivian dies in police custody

A 49-year-old Bolivian national died allegedly of heart attack while in police custody on Friday. The police said that he was suspected to have been carrying drugs, but nothing was found out during his medical examination.

DCP (IGI Airport) Sanjay Bhatia said that the deceased has been identified as Salomon Edgar Vaca Arambel.

The police said that Mr. Arambel had reached Delhi from Adis Ababa around 8:15 a.m. “There was information that he was carrying drugs after which he was examined by the Custom officials who later produced him before a Delhi court for permission of his medical examination,” said Mr. Bhatia.

His medical examination was then conducted at Ram Manohal Lohia Hospital where X-Ray of his chest and lower abdomen did not show anything, the police said.

Mr. Arambel was then being escorted to the airport to hand him over his belongings when “he fell sick” and was admitted to a private hospital for treatment around 8:45p.m.

“He expired while being treated. The doctors said that he died of a cardiac arrest. The hospital informed the police at 10:29 p.m.,” said Mr Bhatia.

The police said that his inquest proceedings have been initiated.
