To guide tourists about facilities

The Government Railway Police here has established help desks at Tiruchi, Madurai, Kanyakumari, Rameswaram and Tirunelveli to guide tourists.

They would guide travellers on important tourism spots and the distance from the station. They would guide tourists regarding boarding and lodging facilities in the vicinity of the station. The initiative has been put in place coinciding with the summer rush. Plans were afoot to start the help desk at Kodai Road station soon. College students would be roped in to man the desk. A similar initiative has been put in place in Chennai.

The desks would function during peak hours in the morning and evening at the chosen stations when passenger movement would be heavy. Pamphlets would be circulated to travellers about the tourism locations in and around respective station. Railway police said they were geared up to deal with the summer rush and would step up surveillance at important stations. Many crime teams in the limits of GRP Tiruchi district have been constituted to mount surveillance in designated stretches. Personnel which take care of security of stations besides providing escort on board trains. A top RPF official said more men were being drafted and the focus was on night trains.
