Amakhosi down Team of Choice

2018-04-28 17:41

Cape Town - Kaizer Chiefs leapfrogged Maritzburg United following their 2-0 win at the FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Gustavo Paez got the scoring underway midway through the first half before Dumisani Zuma came off the bench to secure all three points.

Andrea Fileccia was in with an early chance for Maritzburg but he dallied on the ball in a good goal-scoring position to be crowded out by the Chiefs' defence.

Fileccia was on his way again, but this time Siyabonga Ngezana made an important sliding challenge.

George Maluleka was well wide on 13 minutes as the hosts began to impose themselves on this game, while Siphiwe Tshabalala was equally wasteful with his shot just moments later.

Maluleka then had a goal ruled out for offside, but Paez was soon on target to open the scoring with a well-taken finish from a Tshabalala lay-off on the edge of the 18-yard area.

Amakhosi were buoyed by the goal as Sibusiso Khumalo tried his luck from distance for the last real piece of action at the end of the first half.

Chances were few and far between after the break, with Tshabalala off target on the hour mark before a Bernard Parker header flew just wide of the target.

Chiefs were in the ascendancy though and Willard Katsande came close with an effort on 64 minutes that was only inches wide.

But it was the introduction of Zuma for Paez on 65 minutes that changed the game, as he scored within two minutes with a lob to beat the onrushing Bongani Mpandle.

Maritzburg responded well and passed the ball around in search of a breakthrough but ultimately suffered yet another loss to Chiefs, to drop to fourth on the Absa Premiership standings, with Amakhosi up to third.
