Reimbursement of medical bill sought

Madurai

A petition was filed before the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court on Thursday seeking reimbursement of medical bill under the Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme (CMCHIS).

The petitioner, A. Ramalingam of Madurai, a beneficiary of the CMCHIS, said he was admitted to the intensive care unit of Meenakshi Mission Hospital and Research Centre here following severe chest pain.

He was diagnosed with a heart block which required immediate attention. However, his claim for free treatment under the insurance scheme was rejected as it had been suspended in the hospital. A total of ₹1.6 lakh was paid for the surgery and treatment. He claimed that only after the fee was paid he was discharged from the hospital.

He said he had to pay the amount by taking a loan and only later on he came to know that the insurance scheme was suspended. He said he had petitioned the Collector to take action against the violation but no action was taken. He sought compensation from the hospital for the amount spent for his treatment.

Justice M.S. Ramesh adjourned the case.
