Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) signed this Memorandum of Understanding and Tourism Co-operation with its counterpart from Sao Tome and Principe. The agreement was signed by the Director General of Tourism Hospitality of the Ministry of Finance, Commerce and Blue Economy of Sao Tome and Principe, Mirian Solange Daio, at the opening ceremony of the 6th Macao International Travel (Industry) Expo.

MGTO Director Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes said that this MOU with Sao Tome and Principe covers eight objectives.

According to Ms. Fernandes the agreement is similar to those established with other Portuguese-speaking countries such as Angola, Mozambique, Guinea-Bissau, Cape Verde and East Timor, which allow these countries to send three groups of six people every year for a two-week tourism training programme in Macau.

She added that there are some people who come to study areas of licensing or inspection, with others wanting to learn more about how they conduct promotions.

This memorandum others want to know more about how to reach the meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE) market.

The MOU also includes mutual support for tourism promotion, education, planning and information exchange.

According to the Sao Tome and Principe Tourism and Hospitality government head, the MOU is a result of the recent reestablishment of diplomatic relations with Mainland China in 2016 after cutting its diplomatic ties with Taiwan.

Afterwards, the country also became the last Lusophone country to join the Forum for Economic and Trade Co-operation between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries (Forum Macao).
