Tharali Assembly bypoll to be held on May 28

The Secretary and Chief Electoral Officer Sowjanya has informed that Election Commission of India has announced the by-election schedule for Tharali Assembly constituency in Chamoli district.

She informed that as per the schedule, gazette notification for the by-election to the seat reserved for scheduled caste will be issued on May 3, 2018 while May 10 will be the last date of filing of nominations. The scrutiny of the nomination papers will be done on May 11 while May 14 will be the last date for withdrawal of candidatures. The polling will take place on May 28 and counting of votes will be done on May 31. The election process for the by-election will be completed by June 2.  She further said that as per the directions of the Election Commission, the by-election will be held as per the photo electoral rolls revised till January 1, 2018. The EVMs with VVPT machines will be used in the voting. She informed that as per the direction of the Election Commission, the model code of conduct has come into force with immediate effect in Chamoli district. 

It will be recalled here that the Tharali seat became vacant following the death of MLA Magan Lal Shah of the Bharatiya Janata Party during February this year. The death was ascertained to have been caused by swine flu.
