The temperatures are expected to be a little cooler this weekend but there is still plenty to take in, from the 20th annual Waterloo Marathon on Sunday, comedian Ron James live in Cambridge on Saturday and in OHL action, Game Six of the Kitchener Rangers versus the Soo Greyhounds goes Sunday at The Aud (puck drops at 2 p.m.)
Here are a few other suggestions for things to do this weekend:
K-W Earth Day
1 p.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, April 28
Kiwanis Park, 1000 Kiwanis Dr., Kitchener
Plant some trees, see live birds of prey shows, get up close to snakes and turtles, take a nature walk, build a bird box — this free and family friendly event has all the green activities to celebrate Earth Day (which, yes, was last week, but the earth can be celebrated every day). Events go rain or shine, so dress accordingly. If you happen to be in Guelph and don't want to drive to Kitchener, there's also the Clean and Green Community Cleanup in that city.
Star Party
8 p.m. to 11 p.m., Saturday, April 28
Waterloo Park
Look up. Look way up at the stars and check out the moon, Venus and Jupiter. Bring a telescope if you have one, although one will be set up for everyone to use. Organizers also recommending people bring their curiosity.
K-W Poetry Slam Poetic Showcase
7 p.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday, April 28
Just Love Pie Cafe, 33 Erb St. W., Waterloo
Bring your poems to share as part of the open mic night or just sit back and listen to creative minds spin some rhymes. The showcase will feature spoken word poet David Delisca. Born in Haiti and raised in Florida, Delisca "uses stories of the immigrant and diaspora experiences, as well as other various human realities, to bridge realms of communication," organizers say.
Spring Handmade Market
10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, April 28
Centennial Arena, 376 College Ave. W., Guelph
Lots of handmade items from local vendors available in case you need to buy a gift for — oh I don't know — your parents for either Mother's Day (May 13) or Father's Day (June 17). Or maybe you just buy something for yourself.
12 Angry Men
8 p.m., Friday, April 27
8 p.m., Saturday, April 28
2:30 p.m., Sunday, April 29
76 Howard Ave., Elmira
The Elmira Theatre Company presents this play by Reginald Rose about a young man on trial for stabbing his father to death. But what appears to be an open and shut case gets twisted when the jurors start to deliberate. The play opens Friday and runs for three weekends.
