Party has acknowledged hard work of an ordinary worker: Girish

The newly appointed Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) president Girish Chodankar started his career in politics as a booth level worker and has been part of the Congress party for the last 28 years.

He joined politics and the Congress party as a booth-level worker from Comba, Fatorda in 1989, subsequently, he went on to become the president of Fatorda Block Youth Congress Committee. In 1995 Chodankar fought the Margao Municipal Council election and got elected from Comba ward and in 1998 he was appointed as general secretary of Goa Pradesh Youth Congress Committee.

After serving for over 17 years in the youth congress, he was appointed as GPCC president in 2000 and in 2007 he had sought a ticket from Fatorda constituency but was denied the ticket by the party.

In 2011 Chodankar was appointed as National Incharge of National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), a frontal organisation of the party under the then vice president of AICC Rahul Gandhi.

Chodankar was later promoted and formally appointed as AICC secretary incharge of NSUI in 2013 and since then he has remained to be a prominent face in the young team of Rahul Gandhi.

Chodankar contested the Panaji by-election on Congress ticket in August last year against Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar. However, Parrikar defeated Chodankar, who proved to be his nearest rival, by a margin of 4,803 votes.

Presently, Chodankar is working as a teacher at a higher secondary school in Curchorem, Chodankar reflecting back at the journey said, “Party has honoured and acknowledged the hard work of an ordinary worker today.  I am grateful to the central party leadership.”
