Several area towns were designated TreeCity USAs in celebration of Arbor Day.

Brookfield earned the designation for its 12th year, Danbury for its 28th time, Ridgefield for its 17th year and Southbury for the 20th time. They were among 18 to earn the designation in Connecticut this year.

The Tree City USA designation was created by the Arbor Day Foundation in conjunction with state foresters.

To qualify as a Tree City USA, a community must have qualified leadership for the municipal tree program, a tree ordinance, a minimum of $2 per capita spent on trees annually and celebrate Arbor Day. Each qualifying community must also be nominated by the state forester.

“The vitality of the Tree City USA program in the state is an example for all to follow,” said Chris Martin, Connecticut’s state forester.
