Five persons were given capital punishment by a court today for causing the death of 13 people by mixing poison in liquor 17 years ago.
District and Sessions Court Judge Pugazhendhi sentenced the five persons to death today, saying the prosecution had proved the case beyond doubt.
He also slapped a fine of Rs 5,000 each on them.
The prosecution case was that the five were angry at a rival manufacturer of illicit liquor and mixed poison in the brew sold by them at Polur taluk in the district in 2001.
During investigation, the five confessed to having mixed poison in the illicit liquor.
