Former president George H.W. Bush will remain hospitalized over the weekend as he continues to recover and regain his strength, his spokesman said Friday.

"He is in excellent spirits, and is looking forward to resuming his schedule and going to Maine next month," spokesman Jim McGrath said in a statement.

The 41st president developed an infection and was hospitalized at Houston Methodist Hospital earlier this week. He was originally in intensive care, but has since been moved to regular care.

The 93-year-old was taken to the hospital the day after the funeral for his wife, Barbara.

On Wednesday, he tweeted his thanks to the Houston area for making the visitors and guests for his wife's funeral feel "so welcomed."

Last year, Bush was hospitalized three times for pneumonia, the flu and chronic bronchitis.
