Fire that destroyed car, damaged house treated as suspicious

A fire that destroyed a car and damaged a house in Canberra on Thursday afternoon is being treated as suspicious.

An Emergency Services Agency spokesperson said the fire began in an old, unregistered car that was parked in a carport outside a house in Fincham Crescent, Wanniassa.

Firefighters were called at 3.13pm and arrived to find the fire had spread to the ACT government house through a window.

They were able to quickly contain it, leaving the house with minimal damage, but the car was destroyed.

Nobody was home at the time of the fire.

"It was an old car that had been sitting there for a while. It was unregistered and unused by the family who live there," the spokesperson said.

"The cause of the fire was undetermined and ACT Policing are investigating. It was handed over as suspicious."

ACT Policing has been contacted for comment.
