ABILENE - It was a gold-medal day for three track athletes from District 8-3A. 

Holliday's Leah Bullinger, Jacksboro's Baylee Thompson and Bowie's Kamryn Cantwell each won their respective events on the first day of the Region I-3A Meet at Abilene Christian University. 

Bullinger crossed the finish line first in the 3,200 meters with a time of 11:44.87, eight second better than second-place Megan Smith of Clyde. This is her third trip to Austin for state. She'll try to qualify in the 1,600 meters Saturday. 

 

Thompson is headed to her first state meet after winning the shot put with a throw of 41 feet, 4 1/2 inches. She's a favorite to advance in the discus Saturday. 

Cantwell is making a return trip to Austin after advancing in the 400 last season. She won the long jump Friday, clearing 18 feet, 5 3/4 inches. She'll try to make it back in the 400 again Saturday. 

 

Big day for Windthorst's Pennartz

SPRINGTOWN - Windthorst sophomore Kora Pennartz claimed a regional gold medal Friday after winning the Region II-2A long jump event with a mark of 16 feet, 11 1/2 inches. 

Pennartz edged second-place Summer Grubbs of Union Grove by 1 1/2 inches. Pennartz has a busy day planned Saturday and will try to advance in the 100, 200 and high jump. She had the lowest qualifying time in the 100 (12.66) and 200 (25.99) in Friday's prelims. 

Munday's Kaven Lumsden is headed back to Austin in the shot put after placing second with a throw of 47-8 3/4. Olney's Parker Mayers is making his first state meet appearance with a second-place finish in the long jump, clearing 21-2. 

At the Region I-A Meet in Levelland. Benjamin's JC Espinal qualified for state in the 3,200 with a second-place time of 10:35.69. Knox City's Chloe Grimsley earned a bronze in the discus with a 101-11.

At the Region III-A Meet in Whitney, Newcastle's Arryn Eli earned bronze in the discus (112-0) and Bryson's Kayleigh Pippin was third in the pole vault (7-9).
