Betty Gwaltney Schutte, age 87, of Huntingdon in Clarke County, Virginia, died on Monday, April 23, 2018. She was born in Suffolk, Virginia, the daughter of Jesse Johnson and Dean Cox Gwaltney, who lived in Lynchburg, Virginia. She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Charles Herbert Schutte, Jr.; and two sons, Charles Henry and his wife, Carolyn Wilson and John Douglas and his wife, Terri Morgoglione. She was the proud grandmother of five grandchildren, John Claiborne Schutte, Sara Dean Schutte, Elizabeth Barker Schutte, Grace Jackson Schutte, and Scott Morgan Schutte. She is also survived by her sister, Nancy Gwaltney Dennis of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Her daughter, Elizabeth Dean, preceded her in death. Mrs. Schutte was a graduate of Mary Baldwin College and a member of the First Presbyterian Church. She was active in many projects in the Clarke County Winchester area, especially in the field of preservation and restoration. She was the first chairman of the Committee on the Preservation of Capitol Square in Richmond as established by the General Assembly in 1999, where her committee oversaw the restoration of the Capitol Square grounds. She was a member of the Winchester-Clarke Garden Club and a former President of the Garden Club of Virginia, from which she received the prestigious Massie Medal award. She served on the boards of Powhatan School, Belle Grove Plantation, Blandy Farm, and the Century Club. Mrs. Schutte lived at Huntingdon, the family farm, for 55 years where she loved to entertain, tend her flowers, care for her family, and share laughter and love with her children and grandchildren. She was a source of inspiration for many and created wonderful memories for all who knew her, always genuinely interested in the lives and passions of others. Despite challenges and hardships, she always focused on the positives in life and the good in people. A funeral service will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Winchester, Virginia, on Saturday, April 28, 2018, at 11:30 a.m., followed by a burial service at Mt. Hebron Cemetery and a gathering of family and friends at Huntingdon. The family wishes to thank the team of professionals at Home Instead Senior Care and Blue Ridge Hospice for their compassionate care of Betty. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Winchester, the Garden Club of Virginia, or Powhatan School.
