A week after the Cape Coral girls tennis team captured the District 2A -12 title over Bishop Verot, the Vikings took advantage of a head-to-head rematch.
Bishop Verot won three singles and a doubles match to down the host Seahawks 4-1 and earn a spot in next week's Class 2A state tournament.
"When you have 11 teams in the district, the other schools are picking up points as well," Bishop Verot coach Mary Gibson said. "It wasn't head-to-head, and they were able to win more matches.
"I'm extremely happy, they all played really, really well today."
Cape Coral had won its first district title since 2000 and had advanced to a regional final for the first time.
"I couldn't be more proud of how our girls fought to the end, just like they have all season, but unfortunately, we weren't able to overcome the hole we dug at the start of the match today," Cape Coral coach Alan Gurgal said.
"We hope to build on the success of this season, continue to build the program and hopefully be able to take it one step further next year."

Cape Coral boys bounce Mariner: The Cape Coral boys tennis team beat Mariner 4-0 in a Region 2A final to advance to next week's Class 2A state meet.
Cape Coral's Ian Ziegler at No. 1 singles and No. 2 Matthew Orozco continued their undefeated seasons, winning both of their matches in straight sets. Corey Williamson and Max Slafer also won in straight sets to secure the team win for the Seahawks.
"Cape is a very talented team, and we needed to bring our best. Unfortunately, we just didn’t have it today," Mariner coach Joshua Gompper said.
