The by-elections to Kairana Lok Sabha seat and Noorpur assembly seat will be held on May 28, according Election Commission’s poll schedule announced on Thursday.

The Kairana seat had fallen vacant after the death of BJP MP Hukum Singh on February 21 while Bijnore’s Noorpur assembly seat fell vacant after BJP MLA Lokendra Singh died in an accident on February 21. Counting of votes will be on May 31.

The prestige of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which won both the seats by a big margin, will be at stake in the by-elections. In Gorakhpur and Phulpur Lok Sabha by-elections in March, the SP-BSP alliance had shocked the BJP by winning both.

The BJP has mobilised its resources and senior party leaders from western UP are holding meetings in both the constituencies to gear up for the battle. The BJP is yet to announce its candidates for the seats. Sources said the party might field the family members of the deceased leaders.

The Samajwadi Party, runner-up from Kairana Lok Sabha and Noorpur assembly seats, has also started preparations.
