In memory: State police Cpl. Stephen J. Ballard killed in the line of duty April 26, 2017

The death a year ago of Delaware State Police Cpl. Stephen J. Ballard shocked the state and prompted an outpouring of support.

Ballard was shot and killed on April 26, 2017, in a Wawa parking lot in Bear. The suspect in Ballard's death, Burgon Sealy Jr., never faced trial — he was killed by police after exchanging gunfire with them in an overnight standoff near Middletown. 

Thousands of people, including hundreds of law enforcement officers from around the state and country, paid tribute to Ballard at his funeral.
