SCHENECTADY - The mudslide that sent soil, stones and trees crashing into homes on Nott Terrace was caused by a broken city pipe that sent water pouring into the basement of a home above, the Daily Gazette of Schenectady reported.

Chris Wallin, the city's engineer, told the newspaper that the water line connected to 11 Barney St. broke in the days before the Jan 28. mudslide and soaked into the home's dirt floor.

Wallin said the water seeped into the hillside, causing it to fail.

The collapse of the hillside damaged the homes below on Nott Terrace, sending three people to the hospital.

For months, residents in the area have suggested that a burst pipe inside the vacant home weakened the hillside but the city has been mum about the cause until now.

A number of people have filed notices of claim against the city, warning officials that they'll face lawsuits over the collapse.

Last week, David and Bruce Baker filed a claim with the city, saying the city was aware of the leak but gave homeowners in the area no warning.

The Bakers said the city was to blame for the damage to their rental property at 225 Nott Terrace because officials knew the water was leaking on the hillside above, weakening it before it gave way on Jan. 29.
