Proteas to play hosts England in CWC opener

2018-04-26 08:58

Cape Town - The Proteas are set to play hosts England in the opening match of the 2019 Cricket World Cup.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) will confirm the full schedule for the tournament, to be staged in England and Wales, on Thursday.

It will be a 10-team tournament - with teams playing each other in a single-round of matches - as was the case in the 1992 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

The top four teams will then progress to the semi-finals.

Cricket specialist website ESPNcricinfo is reporting that the hosts will play South Africa in the opening game at The Oval in London on Thursday, May 30.

The 11 venues that will host the tournament are Lord's, The Oval, Edgbaston, Trent Bridge, Headingley, Old Trafford, Taunton, Bristol, Chester-le-Street, Southampton and Cardiff.

Lord's will host its fifth World Cup final on Sunday, July 14.

More details of all 48 matches will be officially revealed later on Thursday, with details of ticket pricing to also be confirmed.
