AMBRIDGE — The owner of a dog that bit a man and attempted to attack responding police officers is facing criminal charges, according to court records.

Kevin D. Corlew, 60, was charged by Ambridge police with simple assault and reckless endangerment as a result of an incident involving his dog, police said.

According to a police report, officers were called at about 2:30 p.m. April 4 to the intersection of 12th Street and Beaver Road for a man who was bit by a dog. Police said the man’s bleeding from his wound was “uncontrolled.”

Medics responded as well, police said.

According to the report, officers found a light brown pitbull in a side yard believed to be the dog responsible for the incident. Police said the animal then charged at an officer, forcing the officer to get back into his car to protect himself. A second officer had to jump on the roof of his cruiser to get away from the dog.

The officer used a Taser twice in an attempt to subdue the dog, but was unsuccessful, according to the report.

Police said officers also shot “Bean Bag Shotgun” rounds at the dog in an effort to control its behavior. That attempt also failed, police said.

According to the report, the dog ran from police into a wooded area behind 16th Street and Beaver Road.

Police said officers found Corlew, who joined them in the attempt to find the dog. A resident called police at about 5:30 p.m. to report the dog was spotted behind Crestview Village. According to the report, Corlew took a whistle and a leash to the area to retrieve the dog.

Police said Corlew spoke with officers from the Beaver County Humane Society and agreed to “have the dog put down based on the facts of the incident.”

Corlew, of 1114 Beaver Road, was told by humane officers that he was responsible for the cost of a rabies test and fees associated with euthanizing the dog.

Police said investigators are still waiting for information associated with medical bills for the victim.
