BAIRD – Holliday’s Bailee Lawson made sure her senior year of high school golf would be her best.
Needing a quality round to have a chance of advancing to state, Lawson fired a second-round 82 Thursday at Shady Oaks Golf Course.
Lawson’s two-day total of 168 placed her in fourth at the Region I-3A Tournament, earning a state berth by finishing as the third medalist not on a state-qualifying team. Lawson was one shot shy of a playoff for a bronze with Childress’ Taitlyn Thompson.
“I was very proud of how Bailee played today,” Holliday coach Clay Strealy said. “She was able to play fairly consistent throughout. She had only one bad hole, but she didn’t let it get her down and was able to bounce back and finish strong.
“I’m so happy she is finishing her athletic career on such a high note.”
Lawson was the area’s only 3A state qualifier Thursday as Jacksboro finished fifth in the team standings. The Tigerettes entered the final round tied for third place, but shot five shots worse for a 370-375—745.
Shallowater (360-349—709) earned regional title honors by 12 strokes over Sonora, while Brock rallied to finish third at 731.
Holliday’s Scotta Anderson tied for eighth place with an 87-85—172. Alpine’s Morgan Molsbee won the regional title by seven shots with a 77-75—152. Leading the Tigerettes was Jordan Nichols, who carded an 85-91—176.
Region I-5A: Rider’s Abby Wright finished with an 89-93—182 at the Region I-5A Tournament at Rawls Golf Course. Wright improved by 28 shots from last year’s regional total.
