BHUBANESWAR: BJP MLAs on Wednesday demanded that arrested party leader and former minister Jayanarayan Mishra be shifted to AIIMS, New Delhi for better treatment.
Mishra, who was arrested on charges of murder, was shifted to the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack on Tuesday after his condition deteriorated. He was admitted to Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (Vimsar) in Burla on April 22 from Sohela subjail after he complained of ill health.

Raising the issue during zero hour, BJP leader Rabinarayan Naik said Mishra had earlier undergone treatment at AIIMS in New Delhi. "Since SCB has no specialists to treat him, we demand to shift him to AIIMS, New Delhi," Naik said.

BJP legislature party leader K V Singhdeo also expressed concern over Mishra's deteriorating health. "Mishra was referred to SCB since Vimsar has no nephrologist. His blood pressure has been very high yesterday. To ensure better treatment, the state government should take steps to shift him to AIIMS, New Delhi," Singh Deo said.

The BJP leader is suffering from heart and kidney ailments, sources said.

He was arrested on March 15 in connection with the Banabira firing incident that had taken place on the night of April 22 ahead of the Bijepur byelection in Bargarh district. While brother of state labour minister Susanta Singh - Subrat - was among the four injured in the incident, one Dileswar alias Maggi Sahu had succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment at SCB.

The BJP MLAs also raised the issue of brown plant hopper (BPH) attack on Rabi crops in some blocks under Hirakud command area in Sambalpur district.

Naik said not a single official has visited the fields to take stock of the situation.
