How Avengers Infinity War’s Rotten Tomatoes score compares to rest of Marvel

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has quite the unblemished record on Rotten Tomatoes. With Avengers: Infinity War debuting with an 86% score, here’s how the rest of the lineup compares.

Rotten Tomatoes scores might be controversial - several filmmakers look at the review aggregator site as being a step backwards for film criticism - but studios live by them. A ‘rotten’ score can affect a film’s box office, and likewise, a ‘fresh’ score, when received, is proudly plastered on posters - sort of like how blurbs were a few years ago.

With Avengers: Infinity War debuting to a healthy 86% score on Wednesday, it gives us an opportunity to take a look at how Marvel movies have performed with the critics over the years.

Famously, Marvel has crafted a dependable perception among both critics and fans, with none of their 19 films falling in the ‘rotten’ category (less than 60%). And while Infinity War’s score isn’t as high as the first Avengers film’s rating (92%), it is higher than what Avengers: Age of Ultron could manage (76%).

At a glace, the highest rated Marvel movie is February’s Black Panther (96%) and lowest rated of the lot is Thor: The Dark World (66%). But to add a little bit of nuance to these scores - Rotten Tomatoes is very binary - fans should take a look at their average rating. The average rating is a tally of the individual scores every critic has given a particular film, thereby making it a more accurate representation of the film’s reception.

So Infinity War’s 86% score translates to a 7.6/10 rating. Black Panther is at an 8.2/10, Ultron at 6.7 and the original Avengers at a round 8.
