Crossing all limits of cruelty, a quack in Chatra allegedly castrated a newborn baby on Tuesday to prove his sex determination test correct which ultimately led to the death of the baby. The fake doctor escaped after an FIR was lodged against him by the father of the child, Anil Panda.

A woman, Guria Devi, who was in her eighth month of pregnancy, was admitted to ‘Om Clinic’ in Chatra town being run by the self-proclaimed doctor, Anuj Kumar, who conducted ultrasonography and declared that it was a baby girl in her womb. However, the woman gave birth to baby boy who was castrated by the doctor to prove himself right and evade infamy.

Taking cognisance of the incident, Principal Secretary (Health), Nidhi Khare, said that a show-cause notice will be issued to the civil surgeon asking why action was not taken against the quacks playing with the lives of the people despite her directions.

“It is a failure on the part of the district administration that despite my directions such incidents are taking place. I had given strict instructions to take action against those involved in such shady business,” said Khare.

According to the child’s father Panda, he admitted his wife to Aastha Clinic run by Dr Arun Kumar after she complained of intense pain in her stomach and was referred to Om Clinic at Jaiprakash Nagar in Chatra. Dr Anuj Kumar, the owner of the clinic, asked him to wait for a few hours and told him after conducting ultrasonography that it was a baby girl in her womb.

“I was asked that my wife was having intense pain and an operation had to be conducted for which Rs 17,000 was required. I deposited Rs 10,000 and went to arrange the rest of the amount but was devastated when my wife told the story to me when I returned,” said Panda. His wife told him that she had given birth to a baby boy but to prove them right, the doctor castrated the child who ultimately died due to bleeding, Panda added.

The baby’s mother, who was witness to what was happening, created an uproar at the nursing home following which the doctors tried to offer money to hush up the incident, but they decided to take the matter to the police and lodged an FIR, Panda said.

The police reached the nursing home on Wednesday and sent the baby’s body for post-mortem examination, and also launched a search operation to arrest the quack.

Incidentally, a notice had been issued to the illegal nursing home, but no further action was taken.

Meanwhile, Chatra civil surgeon has ordered a massive drive to identify such un-authorized clinics run by quacks and take action against them.

“Post-mortem was conducted following which the allegations made by the father of the child has been found to be true. As FIR has been lodged against the two quacks, police will take action against them,” said civil surgeon SP Singh.
