Firefighters are battling a three-alarm blaze at a two-story townhouse in the city's Corktown neighbourhood.

The fire broke out around 8:30 p.m. Thursday near Queen Street East and Sumach Street, says Toronto Fire.

"Due to how the fire is extending our crews are fighting the flames defensively, which means they aren't able to go in because of how heavy the smoke and blaze is," says Toronto Fire Captain Adrian Rathushniak.

One firefighter is being treated for a leg injury they sustained while responding to the blaze, according to Toronto paramedics.

Buildings near the townhouse have been cleared by crews and there are no reports of any other injuries, Rathushniak added.

Toronto Fire says they may keep a crew overnight to ensure the fire doesn't flare up again.

Queen Street East is closed in both directions from Power Street to River Street.
