The tango is more than just a dance for Marina Katayeva; it’s become a way of life that inspired her creatively in ways she never expected.

From her very first tango lesson five years ago, Katayeva was hooked. At the time, she was looking for a form of exercise to keep her mind active so she decided on a whim to stop in for a lesson at Providence Tango.

She was mesmerized, to say the least.

Not only did Katayeva embrace the international dance, something moved her to start sketching the fluid movement of the dancers as she improved her own skills dancing there every Friday night.

Her sketches grew over time into larger paintings and even larger canvas panels with minimal lines conveying the elegant dance.

Naturally, the first showing of the panels was at Providence Tango where they were draped along the walls. Through a friend, the tango series caught the eye of an art curator who asked her to exhibit them in New York at Webster Hall, where they were displayed outside the building for the Quarterly Arts Soiree. Exhibits followed at a tango festival in Boston, then in shows in Providence and other cities.

At the tango ballroom, called a milonga, dancers from age 16 to 100 meet to share in the experience of the dance. Following the “rules” of the milonga, an invitation comes in the form of a nod of the head called a cabeceo.

Traveling to Europe to visit family, Katayeva said she started people-watching in airports and other places to see if she could tell by people’s posture and they way they moved if they were, like her, a “tanguero.” The idea led to her next tango-inspired creation, Charmed Cabeceo. The metal medallion, with two beads, floating in an infinity shape inside a circle is a subtle symbol for tangueros to use to recognize each other outside of the milonga.

First, Katayeva envisioned people hanging the medallion with its simple tassel from a pocketbook or briefcase, but it caught on with people in the tango realm.

A native of Ukraine, Katayeva moved to Fall River more than 20 years ago. Check out Katayeva’s tango-inspired creations on Friday, April 27, at the Cherry & Webb Gallery from 6 to 8 p.m. at the opening night of ArtWeek in Fall River, organized by the Creative Arts Network. Tango dancers will perform, and light appetizers will be served.
