Rescue maize growers: CPI(M)

Squarely blaming the alleged tardy procurement of maize by the government agencies for the woes growers hit hard by Tuesday’s unseasonal rain, CPI (M) State secretariat member P. Sudarshan Rao demanded that the State government come to the rescue of the distraught farmers.

The State government should ensure procurement of the entire stock of maize that got soaked at the Agriculture Market Yard here, he demanded.

Mr. Rao was speaking to the maize farmers along with the party district secretary N. Nageswara Rao here on Wednesday.

He flayed the government for opening only nine maize procurement centres in the district in the current season as against the actual requirement of at least 19 centres. Additional maize procurement centres should be set up in Khammam division at places like Bonakal, Chintakani and Madhira, he insisted.

Earlier, several distraught maize farmers narrated their tale of woe explaining how the sudden spell of untimely rain drenched their maize stock at the market yard on Tuesday night.

They rued that they were compelled to wait for long hours with their maize stock due to the “delayed procurement process.”

Telangana Rythu Sangham district secretary Madineni Ramesh, CPI (M) district secretariat members B. Lenin, Y. Srikanth and B. Veerabhadram, among others were present.
