Bhopal: Quota students of Journalism varsity centres denied scholarship

Bhopal: Over 8000 students belonging to OBC and SC/ST category studying at study centers affiliated to Journalism University are being denied scholarship for years. However, their counterparts studying at Bhopal campus of Makhanlal Chaturvedi National University of Journalism and Communication are enjoying all benefits.

The authorities, however, claimed that their recommendations regarding scholarship were not considered by government department. The varsity has given affiliation to around 351 study centers to run degree courses in all the districts of the state. The university has been running courses in its study centers since 2008, but OBC and SC/ST category students didn’t get any scholarships.

The university failed to update the information of these study centers on the MP online web portal 2.0, which has been made mandatory to avail scholarship benefits from the year 2015. Manpreet Singh Chugga, who runs a study center in Khandwa claimed that students at study centers in Khandwa and Shivpuri district got scholarship between the years 2012-15.

The university also took affidavit that if any objection was raised, the students will have to return the scholarship money. I don’t know why the university denied scholarship to these students of marginalised sections, he added. The university had sent the recommendations to the state government to give the scholarship to these students but the social welfare department denied it every time, said Director (IT) Deepak Sharma.
