Emerging-market ETFs fall for 5th straight day

Exchange-traded funds tracking emerging markets fell on Wednesday, on track for their fifth straight daily drop in a decline that has pushed the region into negative territory for the year. The Vanguard FTSE Emerging Markets ETF fell 1.1% and was set for its lowest close since Feb. 8, as well as its longest streak of daily declines since November. Recent losses have also turned emerging-market equities, one of the strongest regions over the past 12 months, negative for 2018. The Vanguard fund is down 1.7% thus far in 2018. Separately, the iShares MSCI Emerging Markets ETF fell 1.1% on Wednesday, bringing its year-to-date losses to 2.1%. The iShares Core MSCI Emerging Markets ETF is down 1% on Wednesday. Recent weakness has come amid gains in the U.S. dollar which is up 1.9% over the past month. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.2% on Wednesday while the S&P 500 was off 0.1% and the Nasdaq Composite Index was off 0.1%.
