The Bishop Verot softball team scored 10 runs in the first inning and cruised to a 15-0 win in three innings to capture the District 4A-5 title Wednesday night over Oasis.
Mallory Volz, Alexis Hollinger, Tayli Filla, Mackenzie Woods, Dana Wherry and Madison Clinger all scored two runs apiece. Wherry also added a two-run single and drove in three overall, Woods had an RBI double and Volz tripled and also drove in three.
"We're looking forward to the next round," Vikings coach Pablo Plaza said. "Whoever comes along we just have to play with confidence."
Naples boys tennis bounces Fort Myers: Fort Myers pushed Naples to the brink in a Class 3A regional semifinal boys tennis match before falling 4-2 in a nearly four-hour showdown of rivals.
The Golden Eagles avenged last year’s 4-1 loss to the Green Wave in the same round, but it certainly wasn’t easy. Fort Myers got a big win from Christian Spencer at No. 3 singles over Naples’ Mason Anderson. Spencer won the first set easily but fell behind 5-1 in the second before reeling off six straight games to finish off a dramatic win.
The Green Wave were able to send the contest to doubles when No. 4 Vikram Raju pulled out a 6-3, 2-6, 10-5 win over the Golden Eagles’ Garnel Guerrier.
Naples closed it out in the No. 1 doubles match, as the duo of Michael Moll and Justin Braverman prevailed over Fort Myers’ Tyler Carlin and Chris Crouch in straight sets.
“We had some revenge to do today, and we definitely got that,” Moll said. “We weren’t all feeling at 100 percent, but sometimes it’s mind over matter, and everyone came through.”
