Implement Kodiveri water scheme: Congress

Erode District Congress Committee (South) has urged the district administration to implement the Kodiveri Combined Water Supply Scheme for Perundurai area so that drinking water shortage is solved.

In a press release here, its president Makkal G. Rajan said that former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa had under rule 110 in the Assembly in 2013 announced ₹₹ 137 crore water scheme to mitigate drinking water shortage for eight town panchayats and 78 village panchayats in Perundurai Assembly constituency.

The scheme was revised and the project cost was increased to ₹ 237 crore. However, the scheme, though approved by the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board, was not implemented so far. If the scheme is implemented, water would directly be draw from Kodiveri dam to areas in Perundurai, he added.

The release said that the constituency is facing severe water shortage and it is unknown why the scheme was not implemented.

The assurance by the AIADMK government to construct a flyover at Perundurai was yet to be fulfilled. The release said that dyeing, tannery unit and other industries were functioning in the area polluting the ground water and also affecting the people.

The release added that many people are suffering from cancer and wanted special medical camps to be conducted for treating them.
