The woman who accused San Francisco 49ers linebacker Reuben Foster of domestic violence has admitted lying to police about the incident.
In a statement to The Sacramento Bee, the attorney representing Foster's girlfriend said injuries that sent the 28-year-old to the hospital on Feb. 11 were caused by a fight with another woman and not by Foster.
“He did not strike her, injure her or threaten her,” Stephanie Rickard said, adding there is video evidence of the confrontation with the other woman. Rickard also said the woman made the accusation because Foster threatened to break up with her.
The woman originally told police Foster punched her in the head eight to 10 times, dragged her by her hair and physically threw her out of his home in Los Gatos, Calif.
A police report indicated she suffered multiple bruises and a ruptured ear drum.
Foster was charged with felony domestic violence and three other felony counts stemming from the February arrest.
Foster, 23, recently completed his rookie season after the 49ers selected him in the first round (31st overall) in last year’s draft.
Niners general manager John Lynch said Monday Foster's place on the team was under "great scrutiny" as a result of the incident, which came a month after his arrest in Alabama on suspicion of marijuana possession.
“We want to be abundantly clear that if Reuben did in fact hit this young lady, he will not be part of the team,” Lynch said.
